“Scribble Straight” by Artist Melinda Harr Curley
With all the dynamic shifts and attention on college football, I think back to Joe Paterno and earlier times.
I think about his confluence and mastery of literature and sport, how his curiosity and acumen spanned many topics, how he translated the Aeneid at Brooklyn Prep, then majored in English Literature at Brown.
“Scribble Straight” is a special painting to me, not one that I planned. In fact, it started as an experiment. I ripped pages from Dante’s Inferno, Joe and Sue’s shared passion, and pasted them over an older painting.
My husband drew up Penn State football plays, and I scribbled them in charcoal over the torn story. I imagine Paterno’s constant scribbling surrounded by a mound of worn-down #2 pencils and heaps of crumbled notes.
I remember the success of “straight down the middle,” regardless of the promise of slant patterns, and Emily Dickinson, “Tell all the truth but tell it slant –”

“Late nights, early mornings for four years while attending Penn State, State College became my “second home”. Photographing my alma mater Penn State (’93 BS AgEcon) not only captures memories for myself but also provides a way to share the beauty of a campus and the town that shaped many of us. Throughout the growth and changes, the iconic sites can always rekindle a memory, a laugh and even a friendship. We Are…”
