This mixed media painting considers the foundational strategy behind Paterno’s football scribbling.
With all the dynamic shifts and attention on college football, I think back to Joe Paterno and earlier times. I think about his confluence and mastery of literature and sport, how his curiosity and acumen spanned many topics.
“Scribble Straight” is a special painting to me, not one that I planned. In fact, it started as an experiment. I ripped pages from Dante’s Inferno and pasted them over an older painting. My husband drew up Penn State football plays and I scribbled them in charcoal over the torn story. I imagine Paterno’s constant scribbling surrounded by a mound of worn down #2 pencils and heaps of crumbled notes. I remember the success of “straight down the middle,” regardless of the promise of slant patterns, and Emily Dickinson, “Tell all the truth but tell it slant –”
