When it opened in 1931 in the midst of the Great Depression, The Nittany Lion Inn’s rooms rented for $3.50 per night and included, among other things, a “completely equipped pin cushion.” During the past 79 years the Inn’s offerings—and size—have grown considerably, and the hotel has played host to some famous guests. “Face Off” shows the first moments of the PSU vs. Army game on October 11, 2013. This inaugural match at Pegula Ice Arena was the first of many of what fans hope to be many wins for PSU. PSU beat Army 4-1 with three third period goals. This momentous occasion closed with the PSU hockey team linked arms and sang the alma mater with the Blue Band. Photograph by Steve Manuel.

Our NEW photographs bring to life the traditions and heritage the Nittany Lion Shrine symbolizes. The Nittany Lion Shrine was donated by the class of 1940. Heinz Warneke was commissioned to carve the lion on site from a thirteen ton block of limestone.

“Game Day” is a limited edition print by watercolor artist, Richard Greenleaf. Pencil signed and number by the artist, the image measures 15 x 20 1/2 with an edition size of 900. The framed and matted image size is 21″ x 26 1/2″. A ’63 Penn State graduate with a degree in architecture, Richard was a full-time architect and spent most of his spare time painting in his home-studio.

The original Old Main — Penn State’s first academic and administrative building — was completed in 1863. A fire partially destroyed the roof in 1892, which resulted in remodeling the upper floor and the bell tower. Age and heavy use took their toll, and the building was torn down in 1929. Photographer Steve Manuel captures the very first goal scored at the Pegula Ice Arena. It only took 3 minutes and 2 seconds for PSU to score the inaugural goal right in front of the PSU student section. Unfortunately, after that PSU racked up 33 minutes of penalties – but luckily it didn’t affect the final score. PSU won 4-1 over Army.
