The original Old Main — Penn State’s first academic and administrative building — was completed in 1863. A fire partially destroyed the roof in 1892, which resulted in remodeling the upper floor and the bell tower. Age and heavy use took their toll, and the building was torn down in 1929. In 1928, the area had only two hotels with about 90 rooms total and struggled to accommodate the increasing numbers of people drawn to the area by Penn State. To help meet the growing need, Penn State decided to build what would be called the College Inn on prime real estate bordered by the new Rec Hall to the south, Beaver Field to the east, and the two-lane, concrete Lakes-to-Sea Highway (U.S. Route 322) to the west. It was the entire campus—laboratories, library, student residence, chapel, and faculty offices were all in the Main Building. Pattee Library is named after Fred Lewis Pattee, he is considered to be the first professor of American Literature and the author of the Penn State Alma Mater. Pattee is one of fourteen University Libraries at the University Park Campus between them they hold 5.4 million books.
