The original stone pillars were purchased from the St. Louis expedition in 1904. In 1916 the graduating class expanded the pillars and in 1930 the iron grill was added. The gates act as a corridor between campus and downtown. They symbolize the transition from college life to the “real world”.

The Elms are a part of the Penn State Tradition. Penn State President George Atherton first planted Elm Trees on the Penn State Campus in the 1890’s. In 1920 more Elm Trees were planted on the campus and they helped to create the landscape that we now all know and love. The Elms have provided beauty and peace to generations of Penn State students. The original Old Main — Penn State’s first academic and administrative building — was completed in 1863. A fire partially destroyed the roof in 1892, which resulted in remodeling the upper floor and the bell tower. Age and heavy use took their toll, and the building was torn down in 1929.
