Our NEW photgraphs of Old Main show you the rich beauty of this Federal Style Building. Originally called “The Main Building” this was PSU’s first major building. Old Main as we now know it sits on the original footprint of “The Main Building”. Old Main was rebuilt in 1930 using some of the original limestone.

The original Old Main — Penn State’s first academic and administrative building — was completed in 1863. A fire partially destroyed the roof in 1892, which resulted in remodeling the upper floor and the bell tower. Age and heavy use took their toll, and the building was torn down in 1929. Snowy Night at the Tavern $65.00 – $325.00Select options
A tradition since 1948, “Snowy Night at the Tavern” is a limited edition print by watercolor artist, Richard Greenleaf. Pencil signed and number by the artist, the image measures 16 1/2 x 12 1/2 in an edition size of 900. The framed image measures 22 1/2″ x 18 1/2″. A ’63 Penn State graduate with a degree in architecture, Richard was a full-time architect and spent most of his spare time painting in his home-studio.

The Elms are a part of the Penn State Tradition. Penn State President George Atherton first planted Elm trees on the Penn State Campus in the 1890’s. In 1920 more Elm trees were planted on the campus and they helped to create the landscape that we now all know know and love. Our New photographs bring to life the traditions and heritage of the Nittany Lion Shrine symbolizes. The Nittany Lion Shrine was donated by the class of 1940. Heinz Warnake was commissioned to carve the lion on site from a thirteen ton block of limestone.

In 1928, the area had only two hotels with about 90 rooms total and struggled to accommodate the increasing numbers of people drawn to the area by Penn State. To help meet the growing need, Penn State decided to build what would be called the College Inn on prime real estate bordered by the new Rec Hall to the south, Beaver Field to the east, and the two-lane, concrete Lakes-to-Sea Highway (U.S. Route 322) to the west. Old Main in the University’s early history was not called Old Main, but Main Building. It was the entire campus—laboratories, library, student residence, chapel, and faculty offices were all in the Main Building. Pattee Library is named after Fred Lewis Pattee, he is considered to be the first professor of American Literature and the author of the Penn State Alma Mater. Pattee is one of fourteen University Libraries at the University Park Campus between them they hold 5.4 million books.
