The trumpet is one of the oldest musical instruments. Those of us who don’t play trumpet assume that all you do is blow into it. In fact there are several techniques that can be used to get unique sounds out of the trumpet. These include growling – where the trumpeter hums while playing a note, glissando – where the trumpeter depresses the valve halfway, and double tonguing – where the player articulates using the syllables ta-ka, ta-ka, ta-ka. The game against Ohio State on September 1, 2012 was Bill O’Brien’s first game in charge of the Nittany Lions and it was also a White Out game! The first White Out was in October 2005 against the Ohio State Buckeyes. The student section turned out in white to help the area look larger and to give an additional element to the loud and intimidating atmosphere of Beaver Stadium.
