The Class of 1940 presented a gift of a Nittany Lion sculpted from a large block of Indiana limestone to Penn State in 1942. The work of noted sculptor Heinz Warneke, the crouching, powerful figure is now the popular Nittany Lion Shrine, located near the Recreation Building at University Park. The original home of the university president was built in an Italianite style farmhouse. Over the years the home went through several major renovations; including adding porches and turning the architecture into a Queen Anne style and adding large columns and a large portico. Finally, in the 2000’s the Hintz Family Alumni Center was built onto the house tripling its size.

Our NEW photographs bring to life the traditions and heritage the Nittany Lion Shrine symbolizes. The Nittany Lion Shrine was donated by the class of 1940. Heinz Warneke was commissioned to carve the lion on site from a thirteen ton block of limestone.

“TGIF at the Skeller – Home of the Case Race!”, Rathskeller II is a limited edition print by watercolor artist, Richard Greenleaf. Charles Schwab, President of Bethlehem Steel gave PSU $150,000 for the construction of Schwab Auditorium which would become a venue for classes, guest speakers, and performances. Our NEW image of Schwab Auditorium shows the beautiful Beaux Arts design of its original architecture.

Our NEW photgraphs of Old Main show you the rich beauty of this Federal Style Building. Originally called “The Main Building” this was PSU’s first major building. Old Main as we now know it sits on the original footprint of “The Main Building”. Old Main was rebuilt in 1930 using some of the original limestone.

The original Old Main — Penn State’s first academic and administrative building — was completed in 1863. A fire partially destroyed the roof in 1892, which resulted in remodeling the upper floor and the bell tower. Age and heavy use took their toll, and the building was torn down in 1929.
