The Elms are a part of the Penn State Tradition. Penn State President George Atherton first planted Elm Trees on the Penn State Campus in the 1890’s. A fire partially destroyed the roof in 1892, which resulted in remodeling the upper floor and the bell tower. Age and heavy use took their toll, and the building was torn down in 1929.
